Identified website visitors: who to contact at the company

A visitor identification tool gives you the names of the companies that came to your site. It never gives you the person to write to. That last step, from a company name to the verified address of a decision-maker, is what decides the value of the whole exercise.

What visitor identification gives you

These tools read the visitor's public IP address and match it against the ranges allocated to companies. When there is a match, they show the company, sometimes its sector and size, and the pages viewed. It is a real signal of interest, with a date attached, far warmer than a purchased list.

Three limits to keep in mind:

The full chain, step by step

  1. Sort. Out of one hundred to two hundred companies identified per month, around twenty genuinely match your target. Sorting by hand is quick and goes on the name, the sector and the pages viewed.
  2. Identify the decision-makers. For each company you keep, you need the person or people in post who decide on your subject: general management, finance, purchasing, technical, depending on what you sell.
  3. Build and verify the addresses. The mail domain first, then the address format, then verification without sending. See how to find a company director's email.
  4. Write, without being intrusive. A short message, relevant to the person's role and to what the company came looking for. Recalling their visit page by page makes people uncomfortable and serves no purpose.

Orders of magnitude

For a flow of one hundred and eighty companies identified per month, of which around twenty are kept, the full chain comes to roughly twenty Veriphee credits per month, one per company processed, with, on average, four to six decision-makers per company and three verified addresses out of four. The equivalent work by hand, the French company register then the search for the format then the verification, takes between ten and twenty minutes per company.

The legal framework, in two sentences

Visitor identification falls under your cookie and tracker policy: it must appear in your notice and, depending on the tool, obtain consent. The contact that follows falls under B2B prospecting: legitimate interest is enough, provided the message relates to the person's role, the origin of the contact details is stated, and objection is immediate and respected.

Where Veriphee comes in

Veriphee takes over at step 2: you type the name of a company from your list, it identifies the officers currently in post from the French company register, works out the format of its addresses, verifies each one without sending a message and delivers a report, one company per page. A future version will let you paste your full visitor list and process it in one pass.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know which companies visit my website?
B2B identification tools match the visitor's public IP address against a database of ranges allocated to companies. When there is a match, they show the company name, its sector and the pages viewed. They never give the identity of the person, and coverage is limited to visitors connecting from a corporate network.
Why don't these tools give the name of the person?
Because an IP address identifies a network, not an individual. Naming a person from their browsing would require far more intrusive processing, subject to consent. The company is therefore the only usable information, and it is up to you to choose the right contact.
What do I do with a list of visiting companies?
Sort it against your target, then for each company you keep find the relevant officer and their verified email address, and write a message that makes sense given what they came looking for. That is exactly the chain Veriphee automates for a French company, from its name alone.
Am I allowed to write to a company that visited my site?
Yes, within prospecting between professionals whose subject relates to the role of the person contacted, on the basis of legitimate interest. You must tell the person where their contact details came from and honor any objection immediately. Mentioning their visit in precise detail in a first message, on the other hand, is clumsy and needlessly intrusive.
